Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, came into contact with the islands and its inhabitants (known as Chamorros) while becoming the first man to circumnavigate the earth with his Castilian (now Spanish) expedition between 1519 and 1522. In 1526 Pohnpei was “discovered” and named the New Philippines.

In 1899 America took control of most of the islands after the Spanish-American War; however some were sold by Spain to Germany (including the Marianas islands).
The British also came and took Kiribati. During WWI and WWII the islands of Micronesia changed hands again with Japan occupying Nauru in WWII after it had been given an Australian mandate in WWI. In 1986 Micronesia became independent, forty years after nuclear testing by America on the Marshall Islands.
