This article useful for the fan of cricket in Nepal. The ‘Nepal National Cricket Team’ is also popularly called ‘The Rhinos’. The CAN “Cricket Association of Nepal” governs this national team and is an ICC associate member since 1996. Prior to that since 1988, they were an affiliate member. In June 2014, ICC awarded them with Tw20I “Twenty20 International” status. However, on 15th March 2018, they gained ODI “One Day International” status for the very first time and also regained their current T20I status, after they won the first playoff match at the 2018 – Cricket World Cup Qualifier. This is indeed a turning point for Nepal cricket.

Nepal cricket game history

It was at the ICC World T20I 2014 event hosted in Bangladesh that they made their maiden appearance. Since 1996, they have been continuously participating in several international matches, including ACC Trophy tournaments, leaving the ACC 2015 World Cup, held in UAE.
Nepal cricket team also participated in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers during the year 2001, 2014 & 2018, including ICC World T20 Qualifier during 2012, 2013 & 2015 including the ACC T20 Cup held in 2007, 2009, 2011 & 2013; Asian Games during 2010 & 2014; ACC Premier League during 2014.

The national team plays cricket in Nepal

Unlike other smaller countries whose team mainly is composed of expatriates, the national team of Nepal comprises of indigenous players who have worked hard to come up through the different ranks and age groups. The current team captain is Paras Khadka and Jagat Tamata is the coach, while batting coach is Umesh Patwal.

Nepal cricket team records

Their ODI and T20 rankings are 15. A win over PNG “Papua New Guinea” helped them to get the much coveted ODI Status at the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier held on 15th March 2018. They were also granted full T20I status by the ICC along with other smaller cricket playing countries. After 1st January 2019, they expect full T20I.
They played their very first ODI on 1st August at the VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen against The Netherlands, but lost the match. They also participated in three World Cup Qualifiers, with the first being in 2001.

They played their very first T20I against Hong Kong on 16th March, 2014 at Chittagong’s Zohur Ahmed Choudhury Stadium, Bangladesh. Until they now, they have played 12 T20Is; won three and lost 8 with one draw. They appeared World Twenty20 only for one time in 2014.
